my partner received a phone call (in our workplace) from someone saying they were from the ANZ bank, who immediately asked her to provide the authentication information used to identify her to the bank. I intervened, pointing out that there was no way of knowing that this was not an 'identity thief', and that the standing instruction from banks is to not provide this information without establishing the authenticity of the caller / emailer. When this problem was pointed out to the caller they politely agreed they 'got the problem 100%', but that this was their standard practice. When the caller was unable to provide a method of validating the call, I asked to speak to their supervisor, who repeated this was their standard practice, and told me I had the problem, not them. This 'standard' ANZ banking practice of asking cold called customers for their secret identification information violates the standard banking recommendations for consumers - who should never provide such information, via any medium to an unauthenticated source. Any customer contacted by the ANZ bank should automatically be given the ability to validate the identity of the caller.

If it was from the ANZ Bank, then they should of been able to go to your partner and say:
is your name blah blah do you live at blah blah in the suburb of blah is your home telephone number blah blah is your mobile phone number blah blah you can call us back on blah and quote reference number blah
That is what should of happend to ensure that your partner was happy to talk to them. I would even call the regular ANZ 131314 number and ask if the number you where given was in actual fact an ANZ number.
I would not give any information to someone that just cold called and wanted anything, be it a bank or any other type of business.
This is my opinion, and keep in mind that this website has no link with the ANZ Banking Group Ltd and we would not ask for any information and I would not want to see other peoples banking details on this site.
